The Darkest Hour

This sonnet is about the manipulation of emotions.

If emotions are just functions of molecules,
And molecules are a function of energy,
Then maybe people will learn in clandestine schools
How to form emotions with atomic synergy.

What if the understanding of this conversion
Of energy into emotions were controlled
By those who simply wanted social subversion,
By those whose minds and hearts were callous and cold?

What if they sent some energy into our forms
To make us happy or sad, depressed or mad,
To produce in society some new, low norms,
To make the sunlight dark, or turn good into bad?

Could we resist the madness till the creeps were gone?
They say the darkest hour is just before dawn.
