Did I Sign Up For This? (Poetry Reading)

This is a recording of my poem “Did I Sign Up For This?” The original post is here.

Unwanted, I was born
One cold November morn
My life, one could dismiss
Did I sign up for this?

When I was just a boy
I never felt much joy
And still I don’t know bliss
Did I sign up for this?

I found a pretty wife
To live with me for life
‘Twas just a Judas kiss
Did I sign up for this?

I labored like my dad
Until my knees went bad
And soon I was dismissed
Did I sign up for this?

Pollution’s in the air
My health’s in disrepair
The leaders are remiss
Did I sign up for this?

Such were my pointless days
Now everything decays
And falls in the abyss
Did I sign up for this?

Before my time ran out
I’d time to think about
The days that still remained
And what I’d lost or gained

I saw my life was based
On choices made in haste
But things could be explained
For all was preordained

And now the choices made
Come after I have prayed
I’ve learned to choose the best
Forgetting all the rest

But knowing that I’ll err
It’s not a cross I bear
I know I’m human yet
I might still get upset

To pardon and accept
This is the plan I’ve kept
So whether pure or stained
My life was preordained
