Beliefs are important, but they reveal that we do not have complete certainty. When we admit that we don’t know, our ideas can adjust to new information and possibly get closer to the truth. However, if we think we already know everything, this can prevent us from learning.

I do not know for sure what came before
I was an infant learning how to roll.
I do not know the things that are in store
or if I have an everlasting soul.

I do not know what I should say or do,
for I can’t see how all the pieces fit.
I do not know if I should hoard from you
or if the universe is infinite.

I do not know if I will learn to be
at peace or will be one who always strives.
I do not know if I will ever see
the day when perfect certainty arrives.

But when I say, “I do not know,” I find
I’ve made a place for truth within my mind.
