Sometimes, we find some pleasure in our pain,
as when we listen to the sadder songs.
Like martyrs, we feel sorrow to be gain,
and think we benefit from others’ wrongs.
Sometimes, we take some pleasure in the slide
of either hated foes or envied friends.
To gloat like this, we have to first divide
our private goals from other people’s ends.
But if we separate our joy and pain,
and look for joy that isn’t made impure
by sorrow, fear, or guilt, we can attain
a higher grade of life that will endure.
When no one treasures any pain or guilt,
a world of joy for all can then be built.
